AhlulBayt News Agency: On Monday evening, the White House announced that US President Donald Trump had signed an executive order to lift most American sanctions on Syria. The decision is set to take effect on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.
According to the official statement, the order removes a significant portion of sanctions on Damascus, while keeping restrictions in place against former President Bashar al-Assad, his close aides, and senior figures from the previous regime.
In his statement, Trump emphasized that the United States supports a stable, unified, and peaceful Syria, one that does not harbor terrorist groups and protects its religious and ethnic minorities—key to ensuring regional security and prosperity.
Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, Syria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, welcomed the move, calling it a gateway to long-awaited reconstruction and development. He said the decision would remove barriers to economic recovery and reconnect Syria with the international community.
This policy shift comes amid reports of secret negotiations between the new Syrian government and Israel, possibly aimed at normalizing relations. Some sources claim that Damascus may be open to discussing the status of the occupied Golan Heights as part of Israeli conditions.
